Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, our trusted partner in wine construction, was contacted by a client to create a glass wine cellar for the dining room of their Carmel Valley residence in San Diego, California.
The project presented numerous challenges that challenged the team’s expertise. However, they demonstrated their problem-solving skills by finding practical solutions and successfully transforming the traditional dining room into a modern wine display masterpiece.

Challenges Became Opportunities to Fulfill A Luxurious Glass Wine Display

Before beginning the project, removing a post and bar counter from the designated area for the glass wine room was necessary. Despite the limited space available, the team successfully overcame these obstacles and accomplished the project.

The Modern Wine Racks and Glass Panel for This Carmel Valley Wine Display
The wine cellar’s racking system was the easiest part of the construction process. The team opted for a Black Satin Vintage View Racking System, which could accommodate up to 900 bottles, including storage for 33 magnum-sized bottles on each end. The front of the wine wall design featured a three-bottle deep rack with movable glass panels, while the back had one-bottle deep racks.
The team utilized a frameless glass made of a single pane for the project. A U-channel was employed to reinforce the glass panels, and insulation materials were added within the U-channel to enhance insulation for the modern home wine cellar.
Two fixed, frameless glass panels were installed on the back, and four movable glass panels were used for the front and accessible side. The clearance for the doors is around 148 inches by 96 inches.
Wine Cooling System that Perfectly Fits the Glass Wine Room
Modern Home Wine Cellars are Installed with Proper Insulation and Lighting System
San Diego experiences an average temperature range of 45°F to 72°F, although temperatures can exceed 100°F during hot summers. They are maintaining a storage temperature for wine between 45°F and 64°F to prevent potential damage to the wine collection. Installing a cooling unit in your modern wine room is essential.
The limited workspace posed a challenge for the installation of the cooling system. The team partnered with Dan from US Cellar Systems to address this issue to develop a custom cooling system that could fit within the dining area of the residential area.
The team installed an LPQ 12000 TE Split Cooling System supplied by US Cellar Systems. This cooling unit has a capacity of 12,000 BTUs and 1 ½ horsepower. It effectively enhances the insulation capabilities of the glass wine cellar.
To maintain a clean and aesthetically pleasing appearance, the Carmel Valley team decided to conceal the cooling unit within the soffit. This approach ensures that wires and coils are not visible,
Insulating This Modern Home Wine Cellar
The wine cellar refrigeration goes beyond just having the right cooling system. The team used spray foam with a vapor barrier to fill gaps in the cellar’s U-channel and soffit. This spray foam application insulates the entire cellar, protecting it from sudden temperature changes outside.
Carmel Valley experiences temperatures ranging from 105°F in June to August to 23°F in December to February annually. Unchecked humidity and temperature fluctuations can damage your wine collection, but applying spray foam eliminates this risk.
