Protecting your wine collection requires maintaining a certain range of temperature and humidity within the wine cellar. Going beyond or below the recommended levels could lead to premature aging and spoilage of your wines. That’s why having a commercial-grade wine cellar cooling unit is important.

This is the kind of scenario that you wouldn’t want to happen to your valuable collection. The same thing applies to your cigar collection. But since the optimum temperature and humidity for both wines and cigars are not the same, it makes sense to have a separate humidor within your wine cellar.

The Optimum Conditions for Storing Your Cigars in Your Wine Cellar Humidor

Relative humidity and temperature play a significant role in preserving your cigar from the day it was manufactured to the day that you’re going to smoke it. Tobacco leaf and water are the main components of any premium cigar. These tobacco leaves are cultivated in areas with a tropical climate, usually in countries like Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. After harvest, the leaves are dried, which trims down their chlorophyll content.

This part of the manufacturing process is a key factor in determining the flavor of the cigar. The leaves then undergo fermentation and aging process which adds moisture to the final product. It is crucial that the moisture gained here should be maintained up to the point that the cigar will be lit.

This is the reason why it’s important to maintain the optimum conditions in storing your cigars. Cigars could rot and/or lose their distinct aroma and flavor if optimum temperature and humidity are not maintained. Also, a cigar stored in a humidor within its recommended range has a better aroma and crisp flavor as compared with a cigar stored in a cupboard or a humidor under or beyond the optimum conditions for it. Ideally, cigars should be stored at 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit with 65 to 70 percent humidity.

A cigar stored in a humidor with higher relative humidity than the prescribed levels will result in uneven burning of the cigar when lit. The cigar will have more smoke than usual and it’ll have a bitter flavor. And on worst-case scenarios, storing cigars with extremely high humidity would encourage the growth of molds. On the other end of the spectrum, storing cigars in a lower humidity than suggested, could result in the dehydration of the tobacco leaves. The cigar would have a sour flavor and it’ll burn faster than the usual premium cigar that you are accustomed to. Severe dehydration of the cigar would make it brittle and ruin its quality.

The wine cellar has a white LED-lit back panel to highlight both the wine collection and the centrally located humidor.

A typical humidor setup would include a housing (box or cabinet), a humidifier, a hygrometer, and a thermometer or a thermostat.

A wine cellar is an important addition to a cigar humidor because it helps to regulate the temperature and humidity levels. This is crucial for maintaining the quality and flavor of both the cigars and the wine.

The right temperature and humidity will help to keep the cigars from drying out or becoming too moist, while also preserving the taste and aroma of the wine.

Traditionally, a humidor would be a simple box, with compartments for the cigars and little space for sponge or floral foam that’ll gradually add moisture to the enclosure. The owner would constantly check the humidity and temperature within his humidor using a hygrometer and a thermometer respectively.

But, due to advancements in technology, modern humidors now have a more convenient and automized way of regulating relative humidity and temperature. Sponges and floral foams were replaced with a humidifier that gradually adds moisture, from a water source to the confines of the humidor.

Thermostats remove the need to constantly check the temperature within the humidor with a thermometer. It regulates the temperature in the humidor with minimal personal intervention.

Why Install a Self-feeding Humidifier in Your Humidor

Modern wine cellars and humidors have made it convenient for owners to spend less time checking on the temperature and humidity levels in the storage of their cigars.

But it is still the responsibility of owners to make sure that the reservoir for their humidifier won’t run out of water. Running a humidifier with an empty reservoir could result in damaging the unit.

The team used triple deep wine pegs to maximize the wine capacity of the wine room.

To resolve this issue, expert wine cellar builders and designers in Coastal Custom Wine Cellars installed a self-feeding humidifier in the humidor. This humidifier is a very practical piece for this humidor. It liberates the owner from constant checking and filling of the water reservoir for the humidifier.

A float valve was installed to automize the refilling of the water reservoir of the humidifier once it reaches a certain level. With a usual humidifier without the float valve, if the water levels are depleted, it could lead to irreversible damage to the humidification system. It is indeed a convenient and efficient addon to the humidor.

The Details on this Modern Wine Cellar and Humidor

Custom Wine Cellars San Diego designers used Spanish cedar as the base material in building the humidor. Spanish Cedar is famous for having the highest humidity absorption property among wooden materials. This means that the humidor will less likely to have excessive humidity issues as long as the optimum relative humidity and temperatures are maintained in the humidor. Another good thing about Spanish Cedar is its strong odor that will deter cigar beetles from feeding on your cigar collection.

A humidifier from US Cellar Systems was installed for this humidor project. It’s not bulky for its size of 12 inches by 6 inches and it only weighs 6 pounds. And for that size, it can regulate the relative humidity from 5% to 90%. The team installed a float valve (as mentioned above) to automize the filling of the water reservoir of the humidification system.
